So… What Happened to Harry?
Even though I will admit to not having read any of the Harry Potter books (it’s on my list, I swear), I’d be remiss to not mention the latest book in the Harry Potter series - especially since it’s breaking all kinds of records. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has already sold 8.3 million copies in its first 24 hours on sale in the United States, according to Scholastic Inc.
I am curious to hear your take on the book. What happened? Was it a satisfying ending? Did JK wrap up loose ends, as promised? Any disappointments? Do you think this is really the end?

Oh, the book was wonderful! I absolutely loved it. The ending was perfect. I can’t think of a single loose end that she didn’t wrap up.
I am also sad to report that this really does seem like the end…

I’m probably going to get scalpped for this, but I actually didn’t really care for it. I thought the writing wasn’t up to her usual standard and that she tried to introduce too many new characters and new plot lines to do justice to the ones that she already had. For instance, I didn’t like it that she gave a whole chapter to Luna’s father, but Remus only pops in when she needs him to get away from teh Harry plot for a second. There was nothing about the Inferi. Dean THomas’ interesting back story (that she always talks about) doesn’t exist. She talks about the uses of dragon’s blood in every book, but she never mentions what they are (and this would have been the palce to do so). So many characters die without even a passing glance…for two of them, I hadn’t even realized that they died until Harry is mourning them later. Where was Moaning Myrtle? Where were the centaurs…other than two or three lines anyway? In my opinion, the only chapter that was well written was the one on Snape’s memories. Most of the others were shoddy and listy at best…and don’t even get me started on the epilogue!!!
In short, I kind of thought that she was making fun of everyone who has spent so much time and money on her books. it was like she was saying “HA!HA! It’s over and sucks, but there’s nothing you can do about it!!!!” Yeah, I pretty much hated it…even if I am alone in that

I loved it. And after reading a great deal of YA fiction this summer, I realize what a terrific writer JK Rowling is. Unlike other YA writers, she doesn’t “write down” to her readers. There’s lots of stuff going on with the plot, the language isn’t simplified and her characters are believable. It’s a challenge to me to keep it all straight, so I’m amazed that kids can do it quite well. Kudos to JK!!
