The 2006 Newbery Medal winner is Criss Cross written by Lynne Rae Perkins.
Criss Cross follows the lives of four 14-year-olds in a small town, each at their own crossroads. The characters explore new thoughts and feelings in their quest to find the meaning of life and love.

I am curious if any of you have read this. It met with very mixed reviews. Let me know what you think.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares

Friday, October 27th, 2006

pants1.jpgThis is a wonderful coming of age story about four friends and a “magical pair of pants. The book is narrated in turn by each of the four friends. The transitions are smooth and each girl’s story stands alone as well as being a integral part of the others. As the girls go their separate ways they are forced to stay connected because of the pants. They go through ups and downs and live realistic lives. By the end of the book you feel like a part of the sisterhood. You have probably experienced some of their experiences and this gives the story that extra credibility that makes you want to read more. The reading level of the book is deceptive. While the vocabulary and structure of the book may be “4.5…the content is not. I would say this would be a more appropriate read for the middle school set. I would encourage mothers and daughters to read this book together. It would be a perfect selection for a mother and daughter book club.

Reading Level - 4.5
Accelerated Reader - 9.0

About Tiny Treasury

It's impossible to get rid of a bad children's book once it has entered your house. In fact, if history teaches us anything, it's that it will become a favorite. Your child will cling to it, sleep with it and worst yet, require you to read it over and over again.

At tinytreasury.com, our mission is separate the good from the bad. If I can save one parent from having to read a rhyming book about dancing pigs, then I'll know I've done my job.
