Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

red-fern.jpg
Where the Red Fern Grows is a wonderful story that illustrates the change of a little boy to a young man. It begins with a boy named Billy who has a dream that he is determined to fulfill, owning a pair of hunting dogs. He works for two years to earn the money he needs to purchase the dogs. He achieves his goal and gets two little puppies that he names Old Dan and Little Ann.
The author does a wonderful job showing the relationship between Billy and his dogs. The author draws the reader into the story and builds an attachment between the reader and characters. You experience all of their adventures. Hunting raccoons, mountain lions, competitions, blizzards…there is something for everyone in this timeless treasure.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

This is a wonderful book for all ages! Babies will love the bright bold colors and the board book version is perfect for little hands (and mouths). The cadence and repetition is engaging and soon your toddler will be “reading” along with you. Children will learn the days of the week as they read, as well as, the life cycle of the caterpillar. A beautiful story to share with your child.

Is There Really A Human Race? by Jamie Lee Curtis

“Is there really a human race?” This question, posed by a little boy to his mother, is the beginning of a wonderful book. He has lots of questions and worries about who will win and what will happen and why can’t we all just help each other. Little kids will love the illustrations of the ridiculous situations imagined by the boy. Older kids and adults will appreciate the literal and figurative language used throughout the book. Everyone is unique, everyone has challenges to face but the most important thing to remember…is kindness is the most important part of a persons character.

My favorite book is To Kill A Mockingbird. (My daughter’s name is Scout.)
It has been my favorite since I read it in the 9th grade. I love that the reader is drawn in by a child narrator (Scout). It is through that child’s eyes that the reader sees the simplicity of right and wrong in situations made complex by adults. I love the three dimensional, complex characters who are so authentic.
Before that my favorite book was pretty much anything by Judy Blume. I loved her books when I was young. She seemed to write young girls so well. The characters were so real to me at that age. I still love her books.

What was your favorite? What is your favorite now? What did you love about books as a child?

About Tiny Treasury

It's impossible to get rid of a bad children's book once it has entered your house. In fact, if history teaches us anything, it's that it will become a favorite. Your child will cling to it, sleep with it and worst yet, require you to read it over and over again.

At tinytreasury.com, our mission is separate the good from the bad. If I can save one parent from having to read a rhyming book about dancing pigs, then I'll know I've done my job.
